There are so many English exams that you can choose from. It really depends what you need a certification for. However, the latest exam The OET is specifically designed for the healthcare profession and having had a look at the exam, it appears to do what is says on the tin.

Doctors,  nurses, pharmacists,physio’s, podiatrists, radiologists , optometrists, dieticians, occupational therapists and vets, whose native language is not English and who would like to prove their level of English for work in the medical profession in the UK…this is for you! This is the exam to kick start your career and to verify your present level of English.

The Occupational English Test (OET) is now accepted in the UK as proof of language competency in the demanding healthcare sector. It has been used successfully in Australia as a testing system for English for 30 years and since 2013 has been a joint venture between Cambridge Box Hill Language Assessment ( Cambridge English Assessment and Box Hill Institute).

It is suitable for 12 healthcare professions: Dentistry, Dietetics, Medicine, Nursing, Occupational Therapy, Optometry, Pharmacy, Physiotherapy, Podiatry, Radiography, Speech Pathology and Veterinary Science.

The exam consists of four parts

approx. 50 minutes

Same content for all healthcare professions.

Part A: recorded, simulated professional/patient consultation with note-taking questions.

Part B: recorded talk or lecture on health-related topic, with range of short and multiple choice answers.

1 hour

Same content for all healthcare professions.

Part A: skim and scan short health-related texts and complete a summary paragraph by filling in missing words.

Part B: read longer health-related texts and answer multiple-choice questions

45 minutes

Specific to profession, based on typical workplace situations.

The task is to write a letter, usually a referral letter. Sometimes, especially for some professions, a different type of letter is required: e.g. a letter of transfer or discharge, or a letter to advise or inform a patient, carer, or group.

Specific to profession, based on typical workplace situations.

In a private room you will take part in two role-plays. You take your professional role (as a healthcare professional) while the interlocutor plays a patient or client, or sometimes a relative or carer.

The Occupational English Test has been designed specifically with healthcare professionals in mind. You study language as you would hear it in your profession so everything you learn is relevant to your working life. It is an exam that can give you the qualification you need to kick start your career. It gives you the confidence to speak in English and to  increase  your self-esteem in speaking and understanding in an everyday work environment.
