Case studies

Case study 1: English required for an international pilot's licence

Florent Lecoeur was proprietor of a vineyard South of Paris. His great dream was to make his passion become his career – to fly aircraft as his full time occupation.

However, to qualify for an international pilot’s licence, he needed to improve his English level in speaking, listening, reading and writing. He contacted us in January and booked a two-week residential homestay immersion course.

This gave him a taste for more. He wanted to come back and hire a car to be more independent and to explore the countryside himself. So he booked the whole month of May at Celia’s part of Newlands Manor and soon became a part of the family.

We were able to introduce him to personal contacts in the aeronautical industry. Florent also visited the aviation training school in Bournemouth and made some useful contacts. On his final week he booked a flight and piloted a plane for 2 hours over the South Coast area.

He was coached in skills for applying for work as a pilot:

• composing a suitable curriculum vitae
• skills for job interviews
• letters of application

He is hoping to come back to the UK soon to work as an instructor at the School of Aviation.

Case study 2: Improving presentation skills and cultural awareness

Jean-Philippe is a Human Resources Director whose successful company had recently been acquired by a large Japanese corporation. He was due to visit the new parent company soon, and wanted to improve his presentation skills and social English to communicate effectively with these Japanese colleagues.

He also wanted some cultural training in the business customs and the business culture in Japan. At Heritage English, we tailored the course to include vocabulary specific to his human resources area of business and introduced him to business people with past experience of Japanese culture.

He emailed us from Japan asking us to check his speech for a conference he was to attend the next day. This we sent back with a few corrections and he emailed us two days later to say that the Japanese Chairman had congratulated him personally on his English presentation.

A double testimonial:

Jean-Philippe came to us in February after his wife had taken an immersion course in January. She had been so impressed with the standard of her English business course that she recommended Heritage English to her husband’s training manager.
